Danbury Railway Museum

As a non-profit organization, the Danbury Railway Museum is run and operated by volunteers. The station was built in 1903 by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. During its heyday, the station saw up to 125 trains per day.
The historic station and rail road today is located in downtown Danbury CT. Families and individuals can learn about the railroad’s history, take a train ride, or even do some hands-on railroad work. Here’s what you can expect from visiting the Danbury Railway Museum.

The Danbury Railway Museum—The Perfect Family Outing
Families are always looking for low-cost options to explore with their families. Fortunately, the Danbury Railway Museum is a great option for both the young and old.
Located inside of an old station originally built around 1903, the inside of the museum has enough space for a few exhibits, but the space is rather small. Tucked inside are multiple displays and artifacts that give you a great overview of this era in American history. One cool feature is the three-separate model railroad displays. Each of these displays tells a different story about the railroad history. Once you arrive in the main room there is a video that covers most of the history and gives you insight into how the railroad came about. Parents and grandparents will find this interesting. But if you’re shuffling children through the museum, what might interest you more are the train rides.
During most of the year, the volunteers who run the museum offer short train rides throughout the year, with the exception of the cold weather months. Also, sitting in the train yard there is a mix of rolling stock in multiple conditions. You’ll find that some are complete restored while others are in good condition considering their age. But all of them are interesting. Kids will also love the rail house if they enjoy trinkets, playing with levers and hands on exploration.
You can also do some real ‘railroad work’ at 12 inches to the foot scale to see what railroad workers did on a daily basis. Children and adults alike can educate themselves regarding the history of the railroad in this diverse museum. And if you want to take something home with you, they also offer a small gift shop that has books, souvenirs, and videos to purchase.

Special Events at the Museum
The Museum is a great place to hold a special event as well. They do birthday parties and gatherings for families. During the holidays, you can also take the kids on a Santa train or during the spring kids can visit with the Easter bunny in his special car as well. They also do a pumpkin patch in the fall.
