History of Tarrywile Mansion and Park
Located just 1 mile from downtown Danbury, the city bought the park and mansion from the Charles D. Parks Estate in 1985. Purchased for just $4.7 million, the city turned the property over to a few employees and to the general public shortly thereafter.
However, the city didn’t willingly buy the property. In fact, the estate actually tried to sell it to the city on multiple occasions. After multiple failed attempts, the park decided to sell it to several condo developers. Local residents were not happy about the change, and so they decided to plead with the city to purchase the property.
The purchase included 535 acres that included meadows, lakes, ponds, and mountains along with 19 separate buildings. Eventually, the property was converted into a public park that today is run on less than half a million dollars per year.
Parks and Trails Galore
The park has over twenty-one miles of hiking, cross country running and skiing, mountain biking and horseback riding trails. It’s not surprising that Danbury CT residents have made it a regular part of their spring, summer and fall seasons.
